Boy Blue Revisited

Little Boy Blue
What’s got you so down?
The sunlight is throbbing
And all around town
The people are staring
Up into the sky.
And here you are moping.
I wish I knew why.

“The evening is lovely
It’s just as you said,
Young mothers are sending
Young children to bed
And reading them stories
And telling them rhymes.
Even fathers are doing
Whatever they do
To keep running smoothly
Their families, true.
It's just like old times,
There's no mention of gloom.
The sheeps in the meadow,
The cows in the corn
And everything’s happy
But I am forlorn.

"You promised you’d love me
Sweet Mary, my life,
But you’ve proved contrary
And won’t be my wife.”

Oh, is that all it is
That’s made the boy blue?
You’re sad just because
I mentioned we’re through?
I feared it was something
Specific to you.
If you want to feel better,
Just give this a try:
Go get your bugle
And play to the sky,
Forget that you love me
And keep your eyes dry.
Get lost in the music
Of the sun, going down.

You know what will happen
Before you are done?
Before you have marveled
The sink of the sun?
Some other Mary
Whose heart is more true—
We’ve so man Marys,
One’s bound to come through—
Will come to your rescue
The way Marys do.
You’ll be happy again
Beside your new love,
You’ll coo and you’ll snuggle
Like two turtle doves,
You'll do all the things
That we used to do,
Until the heart tires
Until one of you
Renounces your nevers
The way lovers do
And says a goodbye
And stares at the sun,
And the stars, and the sky.
